In a total basement finishing project everything, EVERYTHING needed to be addressed. In this particular case there was a lot of work to be done. Since the basement was constructed in the 1970's, Columbia Concrete had constructed the initial basement. Columbia Concrete has a reputation of being soft and porous making it easy for the cement to weather away. This was the case here. Because of the lack of concrete integrity water easily made it's way into the basement causing the basement to flood.
With water, comes humidity. Due the the excess amount of water collected in the basement, water vapor and humidity levels were high creating a humid and musky environment which is ideal for the germination of mold and mildew causing dry rot in the support work.
The ideal solution for this basement, according to the owners was that they wanted a dry, comfortable and inviting basement they could enjoy everyday and expand the square footage and value of their home. To achieve this goal, there were a number of systems that needed to be installed, all of which TerraFirma is a certified installation specialist of.
Step one was to keep the basement dry and to permanently waterproof. To achieve this goal, TerraFirma installed our patented WaterGuard system around the perimeter of the basement. Nearly 100ft of WaterGuard was installed around the base of the walls and around doorways. This 100ft perimeter track drained into a SUMP pump to which the water could be successfully pumped out of the basement area.
Fixing the walls was next on the achievement list. With ugly decaying Columbia Concrete walls surrounding the basement, we installed our Basement to Beautiful panels with everlast walls to totally transform the basement from dark and damp to dry, clean and energy efficient making the space look and function better. These walls not only insulated the area creating more functionality but look great too.
For the cold and wet carpet floor, we provided a suitable flooring. The home owners decided to use our Millcreek flooring, which is inorganic, avoiding the potential of mold growth, and provides excellent look. Because there is an extra layer separating the cement slab from the Millcreek flooring, the floor will keep warmer in the winter months and cooler during the summer months.
Lastly we provided a solution that would control air quality. We installed our Sanidry Dehumidification/Air Filtration system to TOTALLY clean the air, not just in the basement, but the upper floors as well. The Sanidry Dehumidification/Air Filtration system regulates water vapor and humidity at 40%. This way no mold can germinate in the basement. (Mildew and mold begin to grow at levels above 60% humidity.
